- Description
- Newcastle is "an enigma in historical terms," because unlike other major Australian regional centres, it lacks "a recent substantial monograph history. "While the (Newcastle) Bicentenary publication Riverchange offered several perspectives variously focusing on Aboriginal, labour, immigration, industrial, and women's history, public leisure and entertainments have received relatively little scholarly attention. This chapter offers a view of the city during 1875-77, a time of rapid growth and prosperity and focuses on the commercialisation of the entertainment scene, following the opening of a new theatre.
